Scaling and Review Notes

Every game ranked was played, but also scaled based on research, talking to developers & your feedback. The priority with the scale's initial design was to compare similarity on relatively objective features - so it doesn't claim to include reviews of the depth and clarity you'd get at a games journalism site, nor the intensive time played you might get from player reviews on steam. We try to incorporate and link all of that along with a 'review scale' that checks for bugs. See the heatmap and breakdown! Time played noted so you can take any notes with a big grain of salt! I can't get to high level gameplay in 850+ games so I heavily research every game. Over 80 game creators let me interview or survey them! I Hope to go back and refine. Please argue or submit your own scores and reviews to be incorporated with credit into the notes and score numbers.

The review scale is judged from -1 to 1 in 10 categories, with 200 possible "points" earned. Steam review positive percentage is worth another 100 points, and a "ten point" pure vibe review number adds extra subjectivity. Converted into points, that's 400 points total. Default is an arcade style control - shoot where you are facing. You can unlock a twin stick mode (control aim) and a "bullet heaven" mode (auto-fire and auto-aim).

Currently playing this one, love it. Has only one level (black screen), one player sprite, and one enemy sprite - but that all feels great since it's part of the oldschool arcade vibe.

Boneraiser Minions

A auto-battler necromancy game if you want to raise hell but not freeze your computer. As a summoning focused horde avoidance game, it has a lot of depth. But it may not satisfy bullet heaven cravings if you want to see a million things pop out of your character or so many enemies you get one frame a second. It also has a dash and special move button, differentiating it from VS there. Active updates, a beloved title by many! Additional notes and score adjust by Raring on discord.

This game is notable both for being widely loved but also for being a firm twist on the genre by focusing on summoning (though plenty of other games on this list like Keeper's Toll have necromancer or summoner characters or skills.) This is not only one of the best VS-likes, though, it's also one of the best necromancer games ever! Also includes a card game mini-game that's totally optional accessed through your lair.

Lots of unlocks from characters to game modes and a lot of depth in a lofi presentation. Patches may have removed the ability to go infinite without amazing luck unfortunately. It's possible this won't scratch the itch for you if you want to see a lot of attacks/bullets come out of your character. You spend most of the time running away from, not into, mobs of enemies while your summons mop up.

This is one of the more unique and fully realized title on this list and also well supported with an active fandom.

Raring Review Notes: "It's a bullet heaven title with a heavy horde focus. While there are plenty of projectiles, it leans more into dodging large groups of mobs in melee range. While it is isometric depending on the map and the layout you choose through upgrades any map can and will feel different. Opposed to the likes of VS, it features (Mini)bosses with distinctive skills and high mobility. The various classes all have their unique playstyle and the game is not strictly build around weapons and passives."

"Controls are great. You only need movement keys and 2 trigger keys or your stick and 2 buttons"

Raring: "In its core outside of spell based classes it's still a necromancy game. You raise your minions and while you can support them, they will do most of the work for you. In earlier iterations the game used to be fairly hard and unlocking Bosses to raise them as minions felt very rewarding. Sadly my review score took a bit of a hit when it started to orient itself more on VS adding features that made difficulty redundant unless you kept looping for higher leaderboard scores."

"While it has become a tad too easy and as such the incentive of "one more run" has been lowered, it is still a solid recommendations. For less than 5 bucks you get an incredible bang for buck value if achievement hunting is your thing. It's still the best class/necromancy based horde survivor if pixel art is your jam."

Raring and I both came to the same pure vibes score: 8.5

A movement focused game that I wouldn't call a single stick shooter, since you don't shoot.

Dev Notes: "Certain features won't be implemented at launch (secrets, endless mode, leaderboards, for instance), but are planned. Other planned features MIGHT not make it in by Early Access but are currently planned for it (Bestiary)."

Bounty of One

Free Available Released

Full release is out now! Western themed survivors-like worth checking out. Interesting mechanic where you only fire when standing still. Auto Aim is very direct and weapons tend to basically just be guns, so with the dash-stand-dash gameplay it feels kind of like a more tactical Brotato, but I think more fun feeling theme wise. However, it doesn't have the build depth of Brotato at this time. You only get one weapon and they aren't very different for most characters, so it's not as over the top as VS either.

This western themed game is worth checking out if you want to mix it up a bit and aren't as addicted to mowing. Pretty good music. I checked this out when it first came out and wasn't sure about it, glad I came back for 1.0 thanks to this project! It has a good twist on the movement I didn't originally quite get. You only fire when you are standing still. If you're looking for a game to move around in circles for hours this might turn you off at first. But there are some builds you can make where you do exactly that and just give up on firing your weapon and that won me over on it.

You might find it slower and less exciting or more tactical and interesting, depending on your viewpoint. They intend to do a lot of updates with more characters coming etc as of the time of this review.

Major UI controller issue with unlocks seems fixed now. Something about how the content unlocks is making me feel odd, note to self to check reviews. You can do endless mode after completing a run but you don't get any rewards, dinging it in the category.

Has four player multiplayer which is pretty notable. I kind of wish it was pixel art but the cartoony art style is pretty good overall and I enjoy the goblin main character quite a lot though the others aren't as notable. I wish the weapons were more varied and over the top and the reasons to play more were more clear, but it's not a bad choice to put some time into.

The review scale is judged from -1 to 1 in 10 categories, with 200 possible "points" earned. Steam review positive percentage is worth another 100 points, and a "ten point" pure vibe review number adds extra subjectivity. Converted into points, that's 400 points total. Different. First person bow arena shooter.. honestly more of a game design proposal than an actual game. Gets a 0 in price despite being cheaper because.. the content isn't actually there, like they built part of the engine and half the weapon and then put it up. I would like to see them finish it, but I'm worried they won't. This should be free at least until they fix the bow shooting and hire an artist. Low score is overall due to missing many basic features.

Feels like this is a proposal for a game and not a game. I'm really surprised money is being charged. The basic concept is fine. The enemies are still overwhelming and terrible.. just because I hate that there are a lot of them, damn you big red orbs, damn you.

They are literally just a big red orb with a number in it. It could be literally any cute enemy sprite and have some charm. But it's not. The arena is a white untextured space. This gets pretty boring pretty quickly.

Weapon upgrades tend to not feel that impactful since "more shots" just goes to the same place, bounces to the same next enemy, etc. The way you avoid and shoot doesn't seem to change much with upgrades or progression.

But the real issues is the bow controls are perfectly wrong (no pull on left trigger aim right trigger to release so it's basically a slow gun.) I love bow games and after amazing stuff like the latest Horizon or Zelda games or all the VR ones I was expecting gameplay totally built around shooting a bow. And that's not what I got. With my hands, it honestly hurts to hold down the right trigger exactly like this, so I had to play in short bursts.

It kind of works with works with a steam controller profile but then you get stuck in menus, a frustrating experience on steam deck. At least, it forced me to quit out of the game at least once at the gear menu. Generally the UI and overall feel of the game isn't too buggy but also feels fairly uninspired, again unfinished like a wireframe or mockup.

In terms of content there's only the one weapon, one enemy, one visual style of map for two maps. It has incremental meta upgrades and challenge based upgrades. Gets a -1 for "multiple characters" for being first person with basically no character and no unique character build related features.

It's definitely a survivors-like, clearly inspired by the upgrades style, horde gameplay, but it's like a note someone made to remind themselves to make a game later. Then they packed it full of 'unlocks' and charged for it. It's frustrating because I would like more very simple first person arena shooters in this format. I don't have a problem with small games, if they're tightly designed and fun. Maybe something more will come from this, one can hope.

Bowerwhelm Review Scale Heatmap

- +

The review scale is judged from -1 to 1 in 10 categories, with 200 possible "points" earned. Steam review positive percentage is worth another 100 points, and a "ten point" pure vibe review number adds extra subjectivity. Converted into points, that's 400 points total. The points aren't used directly in the ranking, though, which averages the three number scores for the final review score listed in the game line above.

Brain Damage Ranking Notes
